How getting outside and some sunshine can help balance your blood sugar this summer

As the days get longer and the weather gets warmer, there’s no time like the present to start spending more time outdoors in the sunshine. You already know spending time outside makes you happier and healthier, but did you know that in addition to being good for your mental health and overall well-being, spending time in nature can also help balance your blood sugar?

For diabetics, or anyone looking to maintain stable blood sugar levels, getting higher quantities of vitamin D is one of the best things you can do. And the best way to get vitamin D? Spending some time in the sun. Studies have shown that increasing low levels of vitamin D can reduce vascular issues and improve the long-term health of people with diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Beyond the health benefits of increased levels of Vitamin D, researchers have found that fresh air alone can also keep blood sugar stable and reduce the risk of type II diabetes. It’s well known that exercise also works to stabilize blood sugar, so find the nearest hiking or walking trail, throw on your sneakers and sunscreen (can’t ever forget it!), and spend some quality time with mother nature and her gloriouse sunshine this summer.

Sunshine offers a myriad of benefits that extend beyond its warm glow. Exposure to sunlight is a natural mood enhancer, triggering the release of serotonin, the feel-good neurotransmitter, and reducing the risk of mood disorders such as depression. Additionally, sunlight is a crucial source of Vitamin D, essential for bone health, immune system function, and overall well-being. Regular exposure to sunshine has been linked to improved sleep quality, increased energy levels, and heightened cognitive function. Embracing the sun in moderation can thus contribute to a healthier, happier lifestyle, fostering both physical and mental vitality.
